EPISTLES

These are the letters addressed by Nostradamus to his son Caesar dedicating the first seven Centuries of his quatrains and to Henri II, King of France, dedicating the last three Centuries of his quatrains, completing the thousand. Foremost, it is the content of these letters that lead me to the computation and discovery of the Nostradamus code intended by him.

By the way the letters are written, it is believed these were intended for future generations and a future and famous leader of France, likely in the year 2065. The future events described in the letter to Henri II are set intentionally out of sequence by Nostradamus, it is only upon dating the Nostradamus quatrains pertaining to this events that one could set them in proper chronological order.

Nostradamus strongly emphasize on the fact that his predictions were made through divine gift of inspiration from the Immortal God the Creator and nothing related to any occult science.

These letters are in their original French with English translation and not an interpretation, as most scholars have ventured to wrongly do, some sentences are followed by my comments leading to perhaps a better understanding. The translated grammar and punctuation are as close as possible to the original, which in the 16th century were at their embryonic stage, the text may be sometime hard to read but the purpose is to keep the integrity of Nostradamus writings.

PREFACE DE M. MICHEL NOSTRADAMVS A SES PROPHETIES

Ad Caesarem Nostradamum filium,

Vie et felicite.

PREFACE BY M. MICHEL NOSTRADAMUS TO HIS PROPHECIES

To Caesar Nostradamus my son,

Long life and happiness.

Your late arrival, César Nostradame my son , has caused me to set out in writing the long periods that I have spent in continual nocturnal watches, in order to leave you a memorandum, after the physical extinction of your progenitor, for the general benefit of mankind, of that about which the Divine essence has granted me knowledge through the Astronomical revolutions.

And since it has pleased the Immortal God that you have not come in natural light in this earthly shore, and do not want to state your years (of maturity) never the less your Martial months incapable to receive in your weak understanding what I shall be constraint to specify after my death: seeing that it is not possible to leave you in writing what shall be obliterated by the ravages of time: for the hereditary gift of the occult prediction shall be shut up within my bosom: considering also the outcome of human events is uncertain, and that all of it is ruled and governed by the power of God Inestimable, inspiring us not by drunken frenzy, nor by melancholic emotion, but by astronomical assertions.

Soli numine divino afflati praesagiunt & spiritu prophetico particularia.

Only those divinely inspired can predict particular things in a prophetic spirit.

Although I have long repeatedly predicted, well in advance, what has since come to pass , and in particular regions, asserting the whole of it to have been done through divine vertu and inspiration and having deliberately said nothing of, and refrained from putting in writing, other events both happy and unfortunate that were foreshadowed as increasingly imminent, and that have since come to pass by the regions of the world, for fear of attack, and not only of the present time, but also of most of the future, to put in writing, because regimes, sects and religions shall undergo such diametrical changes with respect to the present that if I were to disclose what shall come to pass, members of governments, sects, religions and faiths would find it so out of kilter to their fantasies, that they will come to condemn what will be recognized as having been seen and perceived over the centuries to come. Considering also the statement of the true Savior.

(Give not that which is holy unto dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn upon you and tear you in pieces) That was the cause for me to refrain from public utterance and prevented putting the pen to the paper, Then I extended myself declaring for the common future, by abstruse and puzzling sentences the future causes, even those truly urgent ones and those that I have foreseen, whatever human changes may be to come shouldn’t scandalize delicate ears, and the whole thing written in nebulous form, rather than all prophetic, although, 'Abscondisti haec sapientibus, & prudentibus, id est. potentibus & regibus, & enucsleasti ea exiguis & tenuibus ('Thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent, i.e. the mighty and kings, and hast revealed them to the small and weak): and to the Prophets by the way of the immortal God, and the good Angels have received the spirit of foretelling, by which they see distant things and come to foresee the future events, for nothing can be fully achieved without him, to whom so great is the power, and goodness to his subjects, that while they abide in them, while still subject to all other good common sense influences: that prophetic heat and power approach us: just as the rays of the Sun reach us, casting their influence over elementary and non-elementary bodies.

As for us who are humans, we cannot do nothing by our natural knowledge and intuitive ingenuity to get the knowledge of the hidden secrets of God the creator, Quia non est nostrum noscere tempora. nec momenta etc. (It is not for you to know the times nor moments, etc.) Although also from present they can be people to whom God the creator has deigned to reveal through imaginative impressions, some secrets of the future according to judicial astrology just as in the past, that a certain power and faculty of the mind came through them, appearing like a flame of fire, inspiring them in such a way as to allow others to appreciate their divine and human inspirations. For the divine works, that are totally absolute, are fully achieved by God: the medial in the center by the angels: the third by those who are evil.

But my son, I am speaking to you here a little too obscurely: but as for the occult predictions that one manages to receive through the subtle spirit of fire, which sometimes by the disturbed intellect contemplates attentively the highest of the stars, surprises one with the written statements of pronouncements made with neither fear nor expectation, nor with immodest loquacity: but what of the whole of it proceeding from the divine power of the Almighty and Eternal God from whom all goodness proceeds. Yet, my son, that I have inserted the name Prophet, I would not attribute to myself a title of such lofty sublimity for the present: for "qui propheta dicitur, hodie, olim vocabatur videns" (He who is called a prophet was once called a seer): for, properly speaking, my son, a Prophet is one who sees far-off things from the natural knowledge of all creature. And for instance it can happen that the Prophet, by means of the perfect light of the prophecy manifestly appearing before him, can see divine things as well as human, that cannot be done, seeing that the effects of future prediction extend far away.

For the incomprehensible secrets of God, and their effective power belongs to a dimension very remote from natural knowledge, taking their immediate origin from the free will, brings about the matters that cannot of themselves be noticed as such in order to be revealed, neither by the human augury, nor by other knowledge or occult virtue, comprised under the concavity of heaven itself, from de presently encompassed total eternity, that comes by itself to embrace the whole of time. But through some indivisible eternity, by means of Heraclian agitation, the matters are known by the celestial movements. I do not say, my son, in order that you understand it, that the knowledge of this matter cannot yet imprint in your weak mind, that very distant future matters are not to be known by the reasonable creature: much less those which are simply the extrapolation by an intellectual person of current events, these are by no means too carefully hidden from him, but on the other hand nor can they be said to be obvious. But the perfect perception of matters cannot be acquired without that divine inspiration: given that all prophetic inspiration receives its principle motivating force from God the creator, then from luck and from instinct.

For which equal matters, equally produced, and not produced, the prediction is proportionally fulfilled, where predicted. For the understanding created intellectually cannot see occultly, unless voiced in limbo by means of the slender flame in which part the future events will be inspired. Furthermore my son, I beg that you will never want to employ your understanding on such dreams and vanities that dry-up the body and put the soul in perdition, giving trouble to weak senses: even the vanity of the more than execrable magic long condemned by the holy scriptures, and by the divine canons (of the Church), foremost is excepted the judgment of the judicial Astrology by which and means of inspiration and divine revelation with continual calculations, we have drafted our prophecies in writing.

And although that such occult Philosophy might not have been condemned, I had no desire to present their unbridled assertions even though that several volumes that have been hidden for a great many centuries where at my disposal. But dreading of what may happen, I made, after reading them a present to Vulcan, (Nostradamus refers to old manuscripts in his possession, perhaps Assyrian, books related to negative sciences of the occult and alchemy deviating from the truth and that he destroyed by fire. The ensuing bright glow upon burning came from the preservative treatment of such old manuscript with saltpeter, which under fire create flashing sparkles) of such that while he was consuming them, the flame licking the air gave out an unusual brightness, brighter than natural flame, like the light of a flashing fire jet, suddenly illuminating the house, like if it was in a sudden conflagration. For that reason in order that in the future you shall not be deceived, searching the perfect transmutation such as alkaline (metallurgical solution) than by isolation, and underground noble metals, and to the hidden waves, I have reduced them to ashes.

But as for the judgment that comes to fully achieve itself, by means of celestial judgment, that I want to reveal to you: by this to obtain knowledge of the future events, rejecting far away the fanciful imaginations that will occur, defining the description of the locations by supernatural divine inspiration according to celestial figures, (indeed) the places, and one part of the propriety of time hidden by virtue, power, and divine faculty, in presence of which the three times are comprised by eternity, a circular course holding past, present and future events: Quia omnia sunt nuda & aperta etc.(For all things are naked and open).

In this way, my son, you can easily understand, despite your tender brain, understand that the things to come, can be prophesied by the nocturnal and celestial lights, which are natural, and by the spirit of prophecy: not that I wish to attribute to myself either the name or the role of a prophet, but by revealed inspiration, like mortal man, whose senses are no less distant from Heaven, than his feet are from the ground. Possum non errare, falli, decipi, (I cannot err, fail or be deceived) I am sinner greater than any in this world, subject to all human afflictions.

But being overtaken some times weekly by ecstasy, and by lengthy calculation, lending a sweet odor to my nocturnal studies, I have composed books of prophecies each containing 100 astronomical quatrains of prophecies, which I have intentionally arranged a little obscurely: and are perpetual predictions, for from here until the year 3797. (From here = 1555, the date of this letter until 3797 or 3797 subtracting 1555 = 2242, the duration of his prophecies) That possibly will cause some people to raise their eyebrows, on seeing such a long extend, and beneath all the concavity of the Moon shall take place and (be) understood with the universal mean the events throughout all the earth, my son. That if you live the natural human age, you shall see in the area of your own native Sky, the future events foreseen.

Although the sole eternal God, is the only one who knows the eternity of his light, proceeding from himself, and I tell frankly that into those to whom his immense greatness, which is immeasurable and incomprehensible, has deigned to reveal through long and melancholic inspiration, that by way of hidden matters divinely manifested, mainly from two principal matters, that are comprised in the understanding of the inspired one who prophesies, the one that come to infuse, clarifying the supernatural light, to the person who predict by the doctrine of the stars, and prophesies through inspired revelation, which is a certain participation from the divine eternity, by means the Prophet comes to judge what is given to him from his own divine spirit through God the creator, and by a natural inducement: to know that what is predicted is true, and took its celestial origin: and such light and slender flame is altogether efficacious, and from such highness none less than natural clarity and natural enlightenment that rends the Philosophers so assured, which by mean of the principles of the first cause have attained the innermost depth of the highest doctrines.

But to that end, my son, that I not wander too deep for the future capacity of your mind, and also that I find that letters will undergo such a great and incomparable loss, that I found the world before the universal conflagration with so many deluges and such high inundations, that there will be scarcely any territory that is not covered by water and it will be for so long that except for country maps and topographic maps, that all will be perished: also before and after such inundations, in several regions, the rains will be so scarce, and from the Sky will fall such great abundance of fire and incandescent stones, that nothing will remain that hasn’t been consumed: and this to happen in brief, and before the last conflagration.

For although the planet Mars is completing its cycle, and at the end of its last period, so it shall resume: but some assembled in Aquarius for several years, the others in Cancer for longer and continuous (periods). And now that we are conducted by the Moon, by means of the total power of the eternal God, that before she completes her entire cycle, the Sun will come, and then Saturn.

For according to the celestial signs, the reign of Saturn will return, that as it is all calculated, the world is nearing a dissolute cycle: and that from the present that I am writing this before hundred seventy seven years three months eleven days by pestilence, lengthy famine, and wars, and more over by the inundations the world between here and that predefined term, (understood as 2242, the predefined term in this letter, subtracting 177 years = 2065) before and after by several times, will be so diminished, and so few people will remain, that one will not find any to take the fields, that will become free as long as they have been in service: and in reference to the visible celestial judgment, although that we are in the seven number of thousand which finishes all, (confirms the seventh millennium, an end to all of his prophecies with the first conflagration and judgment, followed by the eighth millennium where everything is reinstated for approximately 1000 years under the rule of Christ. The cycle foretold in the Bible) while we are approaching the eighth, where is the firmament of the eighth sphere, that is in a broadness dimension, where the great eternal God will come to complete the cycle: where the celestial pattern will return to their movement together with the superior movement that makes our earth stable and secure , non inclinabitur in saeculum saeculi.(Not deviating from age to age): apart of the fact that his will shall be accomplished, but no less otherwise as by ambiguous opinions exceeding all natural reasons by Muslim dreams, also in no times God the creator by the instrument of his messengers of fire, in fiery missives comes before our exterior sens even our eyes, the events of a future prediction, significant of the future fact relevant to whom the prediction is to be manifested.

For the prediction which is made by the exterior enlightenment comes infallibly to judge together and by means of the exterior enlightenment: however truly the side that seems to have the understanding by sight, which is not the annoyance of the imaginary sense, the reason being very obvious, the whole to be predicted by inducement of divinity, and by the means of the angelic spirit inspired to the man prophesying, rendering (him) anointed of prophecies illuminating him, inciting the front of the imagination by diverse nocturnal apparitions, that by daytime with certainty prophesies by Astronomical guidance, in conjunction with the holiest and future prediction, with nothing more than free confidence.

At this time come to understand, my son, that I find though my revolving calculations, which are in accordance to the revealed inspiration, that the sword of death is now approaching from us, through plague, wars more horrible than was to three men’s lifetime, and famine, which will fall upon earth, and will return often: for as the Stars are in agreement with the revolving calculations, and likewise the saying: Visitabo in virga ferrea iniquitates eorum, & in verberibus percutiam eos, (I will visit their iniquities with a rod of iron, and will strike them with blows) for the mercy of God shall not be extended for a time, my son, until most of my prophecies will have been accomplished, and will by accomplishment have fully passed.

Then several times during the sinister tempest, Conteram ego, the Lord will say, & confringam, et non miserebor (I will trample and break them, and will have no mercy) and thousand other events which will come by waters and continuous rains, as I have set forth more fully in writing in my other Prophecies which are drawn out at length, in soluta oratione (in plain prose) defining the places, times, and the predefine term that the humans coming after will see, knowing the events to have occurred infallibly, such as we have spotted through the others, (Nostradamus is here clearly alluding that some people in the future will be able to know the dates and locations of the prophecies having discovered previous events that have occurred for sure pointing the exact date, therefore implying a hidden code as revealed in this book)speaking more clearly: not withstanding that under a cloud will be understood the meanings: sed quando submovenda erit ignorantia, (when the time comes for the removal of ignorance) the matter will be more clarified.

Bringing to a close, my son, take then this gift of your father Michel Nostradamus, hoping to relate to you each one Prophecy from the quatrains here set. Praying to the immortal God, to grant you long life, in good and prosperous happiness.
